Road to Motorsport Photography

I took my very first motorsport photos at the Berlin E Prix in April 2023. Here I discovered my passion for the field and soon booked my tickets to Zandvoort. There I was able to take photos not only of GT cars but also capture the all female racing series F1 Academy in their debut season. To try a different category of motorsport, I visited the World RX race at the Estering before returning to Zandvoort for the Dutch Grand Prix. After that, I ended my first year in motorsport photography at the Red Bull Formula Nürburgring event. You can find the highlights of these trips below and more details on my experiences here.

Motorsport Highlights

Cornershots

At corners, I am able to do what I love the most about photography: capturing contrasting shapes and colours. Here I can get a perfect view of the different car models and their characteristic complexion. Every car's headlights, radiator grill, windscreen and their composition form its personality. Together with the vivid colours of their creative liveries which lift the car's silhouette off of the tarmac, they create a unique look waiting to be captured.

Panning Shots

Panning shots are the perfect opportunity to capture the most important thing in motorsport: the car's speed. This also provides a special challenge for the photographer. To get the perfect shot where the focus is on the car and the background blurry to showcase the speed, you have to pan the camera matching to the speed of the car. In difference to corner shots, this kind of style is especially flattering for cars with a smaller front, like Formula cars.

podium

The podium celebrations are the perfect opportunity to get some shots of the drivers outside their cars.

It also displays the character of the specific race that you are at and the country that hosts it.

Venue

Pictures of the venue can show even more of the character of the specific race and location. It is also a perfect opportunity to capture the different types of fans, their merch and the atmosphere of the event.
